Orbe Oneyda has a thriving pulperia located along a busy thoroughfare in La Ceiba, Honduras. She has taken out a handful of loans over the course of the last five years to purchase supplies, kitchen appliances, and put a fresh coat of paint on the structure.

As a single mom, she has raised her girls to understand the importance of hard work. She has also shown them that hard work pays off! Now that the girls are older, they help their mom with food prep and sales. With the equipment and supplies they have, they’re able to offer savory baleadas, pastelitos de carne, desayunos, almuerzos, and sopas, along with refrescos and topogigios. We had the opportunity to try the sweet frozen topogigios treat – think homemade popsicle of vanilla cinnamon milk served in in small bags. A refreshing frozen treat on a hot day while enjoying the company of Orbe, her daughters, and customers.

Asking Orbe about her business, she welcomed us in and showed us the premises and explained the different products and services. Her pride in the enterprise and her business success was palpable.

Hard working entrepreneurial women like her make our world a better place. They invest profits into their families so that health, education, and conditions of poverty improve.  Join us in celebrating Orbe and women like her this Women’s History Month and on all months of the year.
