Celebrating Empowered Women Around the World: Women’s Entrepreneurship Day
Today we celebrate and champion entrepreneurial women like Doña Onis, who are working to provide educational and economic opportunity to next generation. Onis, a compassionate and humble woman, hosts her Adelante assembly in her woodsy backyard surrounded by high grasses, where the sounds of fruits falling from the trees and chickens clucking permeate the scene. She wakes up early each day to get her children ready for school and prepare food for the business she runs with her husband. From a thatched hut on the side of the highway she puts in 15 long hours each day selling a variety of local favorites like pork chops, grilled chicken, and baleadas.
The academic achievements of her children are among the most valuable returns on her success. Her oldest son will soon begin his first year at a local public university where he will study computer science, while his two younger siblings continue their secondary education studies. As the household’s sole income source, her business’ growth has had a huge impact on the entire family. Doña Onis truly represents the power that women in business can have to improve the future for their children.
The Women’s Entrepreneurship Day movement’s leaders note findings from the World Economic Forum that just 58-70%of the resources and opportunities available to men are accessible for their female counterparts. Not a single nation in the world has achieved gender equality. What are we doing to bridge this opportunity gap?
We at Adelante continue to work towards supporting these women in achieving their goals. Our team is proud of their accomplishments, and all that they do to strengthen their communities and bring a voice to the enterprising women of Honduras.
